Bio

Jim McGuire is currently starting his fourth season as the head coach at Volunteer State Community College.  The Pioneers have won 81 games during the previous three seasons with 37 players have moved on to 4-year institutions.

McGuire spent 26 years coaching at Middle Tennessee State University, where he was the assistant coach from 1993-2012 under head coach Steve Peterson.  After eight years as an assistant under Peterson, McGuire was elevated to associate head coach and then became the head coach from 2013-2018 (162-175-1 record).  In 2015 he was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year and in 2009 was the Sun Belt Conference Assistant Coach of the Year. He was a part of 15 winning seasons, six trips to the NCAA Tournament, seven league championships, and five conference tournament titles.  McGuire helped mold 61 players who were drafted professionally (including two first round picks in Dewon Brazelton-2001 and Bryce Brentz-2010) and 100 first-team all-conference performers, including six conference players of the year and 11 All-Americans.  He was also involved in camps and clinics throughout Middle Tennessee.

Prior to taking over at Vol St he was the Director of Baseball Operations for the Hit after Hit Outlaws from 2018-2021 working with players and teams from the Nashville area.

He was also Head Coach at Rend Lake (IL) Junior College (220-116 record) before arriving at MTSU. McGuire’s playing career began at Illinois State before transferring to Rend Lake.  The final two years of his collegiate career were spent playing under Woody Hunt at Cumberland University.
