Shooting Big Factor in Pioneers Loss
Vol State struggled against a bigger and quicker Columbia State team. The Pioneers only hit 10-27 from the field and fell behind at the half 39-27. Columbia State, nationally ranked this season, used superior size and depth to keep Vol State away the entire second half.
"Columbia State affected our shooting and their size around the basket caused us to adjust shots and they didn't go in," stated Coach Melvin.
Isaiah Perry came off the bench and scored 11 points and 7 rebounds. Kaden Paul also came off the bench and scored 10 points. "Both of these young men are showing maturity to play in this league."
Terrence Cross had 2 points, Antuan Rhodes-Williams 3 points, Jabahri Mastin (FR from Blackman HS) 5 points, Kailon Benton-Hamilton 5 points, Davion Moses 5 points and 5 rebounds, Peyton West 6 points and 5 assists, Jaylan Clemmons 7 points, Brennon Marsh 2 points and 6 rebounds (missed most of first half and reinjured his nose second half). Brennon neutralized Columbia State's height advantage early with a couple of blocked shots when he got his second foul. It was 14-15 and the Pioneers went cold!
"Columbia's defense is one of the best in our league. Their strength and size present a lot of drives and short jumpers! Shooting 8 for 23 3-point shots will not let us surprise anyone!! You must take 3-point shots to the 40%-50% to upset a team."
